New
Zealand Handicap Panel Report 2007
-2008
Another
year has passed with the handicap system working both in NANIA and Central,
numbers are either holding there own or increasing in NANIA.
I
would like to point out that the biggest handicap you can get is the block that
you draw. This year has seen some of the best and the worse in the 45 years I
have been chopping. Good meetings attract Axemen, bad ones go broke.
Taumarunui (2) and Waitomo (3) meetings used David Bolstad grading and wrapping
system to good effect. These 2 clubs hosted the three internationals, which NZ
won 2 to 1. The 2 clubs over the last two years have to put up close to $50,000
in funds hosting these events. This year giving another 2
young competitors Bobby Dowling
and Adam Lowe a taste of International competition
in the North Island.
A
disappointing aspect of hosting these events for the clubs was enduring the
politics that went with it. Rules are made by the correct channels and should
be followed, not allowing Axemen or Officials to run their own agenda’s. Clubs
do not need to have these matters raised in the public view or at a time of
their events when pressure is already upon to run the day, they should be held
over to an Annual General Meeting and an open forum discussion.
Each
year I receive a print out of the Axemen in our area which shows money won,
penalties and lifts, number of meetings attended and it clearly shows that the
money is being won by those who are doing their homework, the marks are not
moving out or in to such an extent which can cause problems to other Axemen.
This clearly shows that the handicap system in our area is working in the
manner that is keeping our Axemen happy as I don’t hear any dissent out there.
David Bolstad’s tribute meeting to Veteran
Axemen who have kept the sport going over the years, the day, the blocks and
the meal afterwards were terrific. (I still think the pig got out of a sty).
On
behalf of all those who attended we appreciate what David
did and many of us look forward to the same again.
Rex Spencer.
