NZAA - Presidents Report 2007 – 2008

Wood chopping is at a crucial stage right now with the overall numbers of Axemen and Women on the decrease. It is time we look back on the reasons we all took up the sport, myself it was because you would be at a show watching the chopping and there was a sense of comradeship and team work but still competitive, then afterward the gathering at the local where people from all walks of life shared the days exploits the wins and losses and all the reasons why. We need to get back to the grass roots of wood chopping and promote the sport in our own areas, resolve any personality clashes and tone down on all the PC crap and turn the sport into one that people of all ages want to be part of again.

There are a lot of people in the sport that put their hand to administrate clubs and associations in many cases, because no one is willing to step up and take over, hold the office for many years this usually ends up with the person stepping down because they’ve taken enough abuse and giving up the sport. We need to consider looking at official office holding the position for four years this way they don’t get sick of the job and also brings new people into administration with new ideas. This needs to be done through from club level to NZAA.

This season saw the council trying out a new way of team selection by the way of a boot camp, we found this to be great to left the standard of the Axemen selected but isn’t the answer to the overall team selection. I think that we need trials and there after run a boot camp for those selected and those to whom the selectors feel have the promise to make the teams in the near future.

I would like to congratulate David, Faava and Mandy on the job they did with the teams this past season, also the under 21 committee on the direction you are heading and I wish you all the best.

To the council members it is a thankless job and I wish you all the best and thank you for the support over my term as President.
