South Island Axemens Team Report 2007
A very
successful trip to Perth West Australia with a series 3
-0 win. The 2 day boot camps were held
in Westport and
Hokitika respectively prior to our departure on 27 September 2007. The team
cut over 200 blocks plus many more in private training with family and coaches.
It is most unusual to see 3 very competitive
team races without a mistake. This team could not be faulted for their
preparation and determination to succeed.
The team in cutting order –
Sarah Nelson - single saw,
Craig Unahi - standing
Adam Lowe - Underhand
Raymond Stuart & Antony
Stoddart - double saw
Daniel Gilsenan - standing
Neil Hateley - Underhand
Anthony Gilsenan
(Captain) – Standing
Everyone cut to their strengths in the
first race with the lead changing several times, a brilliant effort from Anthony Gilsenan on the last log to
give a 2 blow victory.
Sarah Nelson must be
congratulated for the added pressure of starting the relays. Sarah started the last 2 races so strongly inspiring
the guys to victory by half a block on both occasions.
Thanks to Robbie Brownlee
for travelling in a support role and for his preparing axes for our boys.
Tony Aitken was also a great
help with the edges.
Thanks to Denise Bowen
for arranging a subsidy for the fares from the Lion Foundation.
Unfortunately Rangi Bowen
was injured and could not travel
Daniel Gilsenan and Adam Lowe
gained 4th and 5th places respectively in standing championships.
Antony Stoddart, Craig Unahi, Adam Lowe
won open handicap events.
Neil Hateley won the single saw championship and
teamed with Adam
Lowe to win the double saw
championship.
The team were a pleasure to be with and
represented the South Island admirably.
The Perth
Royal Show and West Australian Axemens League have
already invited our team for next year and we also look forward to hosting
around 10 WA axemen and some partners on the tour of Southland/Otago this
Christmas circuit.
Regards
Brian Hateley
